Millennium Development Goals

In 2000, leaders of 189 countries made a major decision: to significantly reduce poverty, disease and hunger by the year 2015. They set eight concrete goals to achieve these aims, which became the Millennium Development Goals.

The Millennium Development Goals mark the first time that international agreements have been made with concrete, quantifiable targets. Each year, the progress is measured and reported internationally. This allows individuals and organisations to pressure wealthy countries and developing countries to increase their efforts.

The 8 Millennium Development Goals:
1. End poverty and hunger.
2. Universal education.
3. Gender equality.
4. Reduce infant mortality.
5. Improved maternal health.
6. Fight HIV/AIDS, malaria and other fatal diseases.
7. More people living in sustainable environments.
8. Global cooperative efforts for development.

NCDO, the Millennium Development Goals and education
In the Netherlands, NCDO works to involve people in realising the Millennium Development Goals. The educational community is a vital target group, and NCDO provides the sector with support in order to interest instructors and students in elementary, secondary, professional and academic education in the concept of global citizenship.
